Artist Statement

I am a lover of shape and color.  My work is a mixture of both the real and the abstract, characterized by a juxtaposition of organic movement with solid, bold shapes.  My mind is most energized by the natural environment around me.  I find it most rewarding to observe how patterns and textures in the natural world are imitated in the man made world we live in. Taking my sketchbook or camera outside to go explore is what puts me at peace in this world that is so full of technological and superficial distractions. I am most interested in shape and composition, and how these can be related in such a way that expresses the inevitable unity between nature and the perceptive soul. Through my work, I try to express the need for the human race to open their eyes and return to what is important; emotions, mental and physical health, love for all things living, and personal expression. I believe that a focus on the miracle and perfection of nature on the outside of ourselves can be a huge factor in improving the internal, a skill I fear the human race might lose grasp of as time goes on.
